In his latest weekly humor column \u201cBelow the Beltway\u201d featured in the <em>Washington Post Magazine<\/em> and newspapers around the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/magazine\/gene-weingarten-discovers-the-real-origin-story-of-eve-\/2015\/08\/28\/818a2d76-4a5b-11e5-846d-02792f854297_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Weingarten discusses Ziony Zevit\u2019s article<\/a> \u201cWas Eve Made from Adam\u2019s Rib\u2014or His Baculum?\u201d from the September\/October 2015 issue of <em>Biblical Archaeology Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/biblical-topics\/bible-interpretation\/creation-stories-in-genesis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Bible\u2019s creation account<\/a>, after making the heavens and the earth, God created humankind. The story of Adam and Eve in Genesis 2 states that God formed Adam out of the dust of the ground, and then Eve was created from one of Adam\u2019s ribs. But was it really his rib? Ziony Zevit, Distinguished Professor of Biblical Literature and Northwest Semitic Languages at American Jewish University in Bel-Air, California, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/biblical-topics\/bible-interpretation\/the-adam-and-eve-story-eve-came-from-where\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">examines this question in his <strong>BAR<\/strong> article<\/a>. However, a more careful reading of the supposed Hebrew word for \u201crib\u201d in the Adam and Eve story indicates that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/biblical-topics\/bible-interpretation\/the-creation-of-woman-in-the-bible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eve<\/a> was created from another, very different, part of Adam\u2019s anatomy\u2014his <em>os baculum<\/em> (penis bone).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstantly, I knew this article was important,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/magazine\/gene-weingarten-discovers-the-real-origin-story-of-eve-\/2015\/08\/28\/818a2d76-4a5b-11e5-846d-02792f854297_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">writes Weingarten<\/a>. \u201cThat is because it finally explained the origin of a common fallacy, a spectacularly stupid bit of scientific misinformation under which I had labored for the first 16 years of my life until a high school bio class set me straight: Men are not short one rib, as the creation myth implies.
